Pralhad Joshi Takes Charge Of Education Ministry, Issues Tough Warning To Bureaucrats

New Delhi: After the student movement that lasted for about a month and the political controversy that arose over the education system, the central government has changed the command of the education ministry. After accepting the resignation of former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, senior BJP leader Pralhad Joshi was given additional charge of the ministry. He formally assumed charge on Sunday morning. Before reaching the ministry, he offered prayers at the Hanuman temple in Delhi. Senior officials of the ministry including Union Minister of State Jayant Chaudhary were present during the assuming charge. The new responsibility has come at a time when there is pressure on the government to ensure transparency in the examination system.

Was a clear message given to the officers?

Soon after assuming charge, Prahlad Joshi held a meeting with top officials of the ministry. The meeting did not last long, but its message was clear. He said that laxity or unnecessary delay will not be accepted in any matter related to the education system. Officials were asked to review pending cases, expedite the decision process and work with sensitivity on issues related to students. According to sources, special emphasis was also laid on regular monitoring of the functioning of the ministry.

Is Prahlad Joshi seeing the new responsibility as a challenge?

After getting the charge of the ministry, while talking to the media, Prahlad Joshi said that education is definitely a new subject for him, but he will understand it very seriously and will decide the future strategy after discussion with all the parties. Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said that many important changes have taken place in the education sector in the last few years and efforts will continue to carry forward those reforms. He also indicated that initially his priority would be a detailed review of the current status of the ministry and the pending cases.

Will the challenge of NEET controversy come first?

The biggest challenge before the new education minister is considered to be to restore confidence in the national level entrance examinations. Students had staged protests across the country following allegations of alleged paper leak and irregularities in the NEET exam. The movement at Jantar Mantar in Delhi gradually became a national issue and the opposition also continuously surrounded the government. Questions raised regarding the examination system at the Education Ministry increased the government's concern. Now it is expected that the new leadership will review this entire matter and decide the future strategy so that such situations are not repeated in future.

Will Joshi's administrative experience be useful to the ministry?

Prahlad Joshi is counted among the experienced ministers of the central government. He already has the responsibility of important departments like food and public distribution, consumer affairs and energy. Even as Parliamentary Affairs minister, he has played the role of coordination between the government and Parliament for a long time. In view of his administrative experience and strong hold in the organisation, he has been given the additional responsibility of the Education Ministry. The government hopes that his experience will be used to accelerate the pending reforms related to the education sector.

Can the direction of the Education Ministry change in the coming days?

The change of leadership in the Education Ministry is not being limited to just changing the minister. In the coming time, everyone's eyes will be on the examination system, recruitment process, implementation of the National Education Policy and many important decisions related to students. At present, the biggest responsibility before the ministry is to strengthen the confidence of students and parents again.
